2008 Presidential Debate
While we were watching this debate, I had to first analyze Barrack Obama in his appearance, tone, interaction, and words. When trying to notice the small things like his gestures and wording I was able to pick out a lot about how he presented himself to the audience and what points he was trying to get across. During the second half of the election I had to analyze John McCain and all of the details that would tell us more about him and more about how he is able to draw in the audience.
When analyising Obama and his appearance, I noticed that he was very friendly and welcoming to the audience and also to McCain as well. He was dressed nicely in the red white and blue colors but it was not too much of an over kill because he didn’t go all out, he just kept it simple. After he was asked a question he would start answering right away and he would not hesitate. He made eye contact with the camera and hardly looked down. He looked pleasant and tried not to look aggravated when McCain cut him of or tried making him look bad. When Obama was asked a question he would look very serious and determined, he put emotion into his answer and made sure that he said everything that he needed to say. Obama came off to be very confident with the debate and with running for president, the viewers can tell that he takes it very seriously and that he wants to say the right thing to please the people. Obama’s appearance has a huge impact on how people portray him.
During the second half of the debate I had to recognize things about John McCain’s appearance. I noticed that when he came out he didn’t look as energenic as obama. He was also wearing the colors red white and blue but with a pattern tie that turned your attention away from what he was saying. When McCain answered the questions he didn’t seem as confident in himself as Obama did, and he seemed to hold back from what he wanted to say. McCain has is very monotone that was boring the viewers and making it so that he didn’t have their full attention. When it was his turn to talk he was hardly looking at the camera and was often looking down without making eye contact towards the viewers. He was also blinking a lot which was extremely distracting and making it so that the audience can’t focus on what he was actually saying. McCain was not using any facial or hang gestures to put more emphasis or emotion with the points that he was trying to make.
In conclusion, with looking at both Barrack Obama’s and John McCain’s appearance, I think that Obama did better in the debate and he had more passion. Obama answered every answer strongly and with emotion, but when McCain answered or debated then it just seemed like he was not as seriously with his answers.
